Netley Village

Netley is a village that grew with the addition of the Royal Victoria Hospital (1863 – 1978). With the building of the hospital came the need for labour and staff. So accommodation had to be built and lead to the expansion of the villages few houses.

200 acres of land were purchased for the hospitals development. The area was enhanced by the vast expanse of the hospital as it was a quarter of a mile long and faced down towards the Southampton Water.  At its centre was the Royal Chapel which is the only part remaining. With this expansion came a new wealth to the village and it became quite fashionable to be in Netley and over the years this has not changed.

Ellis Row

The oldest part of Netley retains the feel of a somewhat old-fashioned and quaint village, with some traditional small shops and rows of colourful terraced cottages named ‘Ellis Row’ (built 1858-65) after Mr Ellis the builder.

Nightingale Inn

Was one of the early Inns or beer retailers and is believed to be the place of the last recorded incident of ’Spontaneous Human Combustion’.

Hound Historical Society : June 2009

The Horse Trough to the right was originally positioned on Abbey Hill in 1884, by Colonel Crichton of Netley Castle. Its purpose was to provide water for the horses transporting sightseers to and from the Abbey ruins.

The trough was lying in pieces outside Abbey Lodge on the driveway to Netley Castle when it was brought to the attention of Hound Historical Society, who arranged for the necessary repairs to be carried out.

The Trough now stands beside the Pump and Trough which were the original water supply to the Cottages 'Ellis Row' opposite.

The inscription on the Horse Trough reads;

ERECTED FOR WATERING HORSES OF TRAVELLERS AND VISITORS TO THE ABBEY

BY COL. HON. H. CRICHTON OF NETLEY CASTLE

IN MEMORY OF HIS MOTHER SELINA COUNTESS OF ERNE WHO DIED SEPTEMBER 28TH 1882
